The entire range of Jute Shop bags has been introduced in Tesco stores since 2006, to encourage consumers to switch to more eco-friendly options than use of plastic bags.
Tesco commissioned local designers to make the bags more fashionable for greater consumer adoption and social versatility. The bags then became fashion statements as well as environmental ones.
Customers are financially rewarded for not using plastic bags, as Tesco Club Card points are awarded to “green” customers.
The Results
- In 14 months, 1 billion plastic bags were saved.
- In 23 months, 2 billion plastic bags were saved.
- Increase in profit from sale of bags
- Excellent PR to build Tesco’s reputation as an ecofriendly retailer in the marketplace
